A Cub Scout leader in Antioch has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and sexual abuse involving a 12-year-old girl.
Carl W. Doty, 46, of the 42800 block of North Woodbine Avenue was arrested Wednesday after a three-day investigation, Sgt. Chris Thompson of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.
The investigation began when police received a tip from one of Doty’s family members, Thompson said.
Doty, the cubmaster and wolf den leader for Antioch Cub Scout Pack 93, is being held in Lake County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. The abuse was not related to Doty’s work with the Cub Scouts, authorities said.
Doty faces two counts of criminal predatory sexual assault and two counts of criminal sexual abuse, Thompson said.
If convicted of the predatory charges, Doty would face a mandatory prison sentence of between 6 and 30 years. The abuse charges carry a sentence of 3 to 7 years.
Authorities believe Doty may have abused the girl several times since July.
“We believe this to be a systematic pattern of abuse where several other incidents occurred over a period of time,” Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said.
“I am confident that after we review the entire case with the state’s attorney’s office, several more indictments will be handed down against Mr. Doty,” he said.
Doty has no criminal history that the sheriff’s office is aware of, Thompson said.
“We are very concerned, obviously, because of the closeness he had with the Cub Scouts and the direct contact he had with young boys,” Thompson said. “We felt compelled to get this information out there.”

A veteran teacher in far north suburban Antioch has been charged with possession of child pornography, Lake County authorities said today.
Kenneth Lee Johnson, 60, of the 400 block of North Main Street in Wauconda faces 10 counts of illegal possession of child porn, a Class 3 felony. His bond was set at $500,000, and he currently is being held at the county jail.
Investigators found pornography of male infants, toddlers and boys on Johnson’s personal computer and on DVDs and in print material at his home, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said at a news conference in Waukegan today.
There is no evidence that Johnson made the images or that local children were involved, authorities said.
Johnson has been removed from Antioch School District 34, where he has taught for 20 years, officials said. He was a middle school social studies teacher. It was not immediately clear whether Johnson had been suspended or fired.
“It was a shock,” Supt. Scott Thompson said. “We had no indication.”
Curran also said that Johnson has told investigators he molested dozens of local children for decades, but those claims have not been substantiated. Curran said investigators have talked to some of the alleged victims, and they have denied Johnson’s claims. The matter still is under investigation, but Curran said officials have no proof there are molestation victims.
Curran said anyone with information that would help their investigation of Johnson’s claims should contact the sheriff’s office.

Supt. Scott Thompson said that it was a shock and there was no indication…? Guess what, it’s usually not something they brag about especially if they are teachers. Go figure? What an animal. To take such a special job of a teacher and demean it with his sickness. STAY away from children if you know that you are sick – GET HELP! And as far as Supt. Scott Thompson – you all have a responsibility to uphold. THE CHILDREN should always be safe and that means that everybody that works in and around the school needs to be alert to the safety of every child.

Hey now… I was one of Mr. Johnson’s students, and while he was an odd guy, a little creepy at times, I wouldn’t have expected that either. Yes, the district has a responsibility to maintain the safety of the children in their care, however, pointing fingers and harping in this time will not better the situation

A new study says the average age of video-game players in the United States is 35, and oh, by the way: They’re overweight and tend to be depressed.
Investigators from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University and Andrews University analyzed survey data from 552 adults in the Seattle-Tacoma area. The subjects ranged in age from 19 to 90, according to the study, published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
