BRAMPTON – A man sentenced Tuesday to 10 1/2 years in prison for sexually molesting children could be set free today pending his appeal.

George Stea, 63, a former Brampton resident now living in Montrose, British Columbia, has appealed his sentence and his conviction on 10 sex charges involving girls between the ages of 8 and 16 between 1968 and 1989.

He has applied for bail and the court of appeal will hear the application today, likely making its ruling today, as well.

Stea filed an appeal just hours after Madame Justice Silja Seppi sent him to prison.

Stea has maintained that the five victims are part of a conspiracy against him, but Seppi noted in her decision that there was no evidence of a conspiracy brought forward. She ruled Stea, who testified in his own defence, was “not a credible witness. I do not believe his denial of the incidents.”

She concluded the testimony of the victims was straightforward and unembellished, and said Stea “coloured the truth to tailor his evidence” in at least one instance, and was untruthful when he testified he has no mental health issues.

Stea is on medication for a bipolar condition, Seppi said.

He was also at one time prescribed a drug that has the effect of blunting sexual drive. He was seeing a psychiatrist in the 1970s and, according to the doctor’s notes, “there were clear admissions in the clinical interviews about his (Stea’s) sexual obsession (with one of the victims),” Seppi wrote in her reasons for judgment when she convicted him.

Character letters from 18 friends, family and prominent citizens of Montrose were filed with the court prior to Stea’s sentencing, describing him as friendly, gentle, honest, professional and non-aggressive. Several expressed disbelief at the charges against him.

A psychiatrist who assessed Stea last year told court he concluded Stea is still sexually interested in children.

“It’s not something that goes away with age,” testified Dr. Ronald Langevin, an expert in the assessment of sex offenders. He said recidivism among pedophiles does not decrease with age, as it does with other offenders.

However, he said Stea is a “low risk” to re-offend, citing other factors such as employment, marital status, and financial security that reduce the risk of recidivism.

Its hard to beleive this pedophile is still a free man after over a year and there’s no date for an appeal yet. How can this be right if he was found guilty and sentenced. This man is not inocent and the people who know him in Trail BC have seen him act different than a normal man. He should not be free !!!!

  2. Julie Says:

I agree with Doug, this convicted pedophille should be in prison, he should pay for all the pain he’s caused to so many victims. There must be something very wrong with our
justice system to let this horrible man walk around free.

  3. Julie Says:

Does anyone know how we can find out info as to when this pedophille goes back to court? Are neighbours notified that this man living next door to them is a convicted child molester?

  4. Doug Says:

Rumor has it that this guy and his mentaly challenged wife are now living back in Calgary. Has anyone any info on when his next court date will be? It’s hard to believe that the system has allowed him to be a free man all this time!!! What a Joke and what a discrace for our justice system!

  5. Pat Says:

The appeal will be heard on October 28, 2009 in Ontario. I am not aware of his whereabouts but had thought he was still in Ontario somewhere. I’ll try and check this out.

  6. Julie Says:

Thankyou Pat, I haven’t heard anything at all about this
monster and I’ve been wondering if he was ever going to
have to go to court again. I’ve heard he’s living in Ontario.
We can only hope he loses his appeal, and goes to jail
    where he belongs.

  7. Julie Says:

I’m still not clear on what grounds the creep was able to appeal his sentence. Does anybody know?

  8. Pat Says:

Julie – I think he has appealed both the verdict and the sentence but I have not seen the actual appeal documents. I have requested that information from the Constable handling the case, but have never received a direct response. Guess we’ll find out soon enough – only a week to go. I will post the results just as soon as I hear. Are you writing from Montrose? Just curious what your connection is and I am assuming that you live there.
    Pat

  9. Doug Says:

Hi Pat, Do you have any news from his day in court ? I think it was today Oct 28. Thank you.

  10. Pat Says:

Doug – Yes it was today but I haven’t heard anything as yet. I will let you know just as soon as I hear anything. We are hoping for a phone call either tonight or tomorrow.
    Pat

  11. Doug Says:

    Pat,
Thank you very much. I guess its getting late in Ontario now so we probably wont hear anything tonight. Thanx again

  12. Pat Says:

Hopefully tomorrow… not sure how well I’m going to sleep tonight?

  13. Erin Says:

Stea appears to have gotten 6 years. Unconfirmed but at least a ray of light if true

This from the Brampton Guardian today:
Conviction upheld by appeal court Conviction upheld by appeal court
    Thursday October 29 2009
A man sentenced to 10 1/2 years in prison for molesting five girls several years ago has lost his appeal.
The Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed George Stea’s appeal of his conviction and the sentence handed him by a Brampton judge in July 2007. He has been free on bail awaiting his appeal hearing, but was taken into custody to begin serving the lengthy sentence right after the court’s ruling Wednesday.
Stea, 65, lived in Peel and surrounding communities at the time of the offences, between 1968 and 1989, but he had moved to the small town of Montrose, British Columbia before one of the victims came forward to Peel police a few years ago.
Stea came back to Ontario to stand trial, but continued to live in BC. He was convicted on 10 sex charges involving girls between the ages of 8 and 16.
He moved back to Ontario soon after his conviction, first attempting to settle in Brampton, then moving to Cambridge.

“I am ecstatic, relieved and so proud of all of us who stood up against him,” said one of the victims, who cannot be identified because of a publication ban.

Stea maintained his innocence throughout his trial, saying the accusations were a conspiracy.

  15. Doug Says:

Great news Pat !!!! I’m a little confused over the sentence. Some folks have said he got 6 years but, all the press releases are saying the original sentence of 10 1/2 years. Do you know for sure?? His wife Laura is telling everyone he got 6 years but she is known for not telling the truth.

  16. Karen Says:

As a victim in this trial, I have to say any time in jail is well deserved. Justice is finally served.

  17. Pat Says:

I’m only reading what has been published in the papers as well but it could be that he will be eligible for parole in 6 years (2/3’s of sentence)?? I’m sure we will find out soon enough but I agree with Karen – he’s where he belongs.

  18. Doug Says:

I agree with you Karen however if I were the judge I would have given him 12 1/2 years for allowing the previous Judge to set him Free for 2 years. I hope all of you (victims) can finally feel some closure now that he is finally found GUILTY !!!!and put away.
